Cincinnati Water Hardness and Spots on Windows

White spots on windows after the sprinklers run are mineral deposits, not dirt. How bad they get depends on how much mineral is in the water, how often spray hits the glass and how long it sits in the sun before it is wiped. Greater Cincinnati Water Works publishes the mineral numbers each year.

Data: Greater Cincinnati Water Works 2025 Water Quality Report. Checked October 2026.

Key numbers

Richard Miller Treatment Plant: average hardness126 mg/L (7 grains per gallon)
Charles M. Bolton Plant: average hardness140 mg/L (8 grains per gallon)

What the report says

Greater Cincinnati Water Works explains that hard water contains more minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. Water from its Richard Miller plant has an average hardness of 126 milligrams per liter, or 7 grains per gallon, and water from the Charles M. Bolton plant averages 140 milligrams per liter, or 8 grains per gallon. The utility notes that hardness does not affect the safety of the water.

Hardness varies by utility. If your home gets its water from a different provider, or from a private well, check that supplier's annual water quality report for its own figures.

Why minerals leave spots on glass

When a drop of water dries on glass, the water evaporates and the dissolved minerals stay behind as a white spot. The harder the water, the more mineral is left. Sprinklers that spray windows, rain that dries in sun, and rinsing without drying all leave spots.

Fresh spots wipe off easily. Left for months, minerals bond to the glass and can leave a cloudy surface that no cleaner will fully remove, so the best fix is to stop the water from landing on the window.

What helps

Aim sprinkler heads away from windows and siding, and dry glass edges after cleaning so water does not sit. A mix of equal parts white vinegar and water on a cloth can remove light, fresh spotting, but test a small area first and keep it off natural stone, brass and painted finishes.

Window cleaners who use purified water avoid adding minerals during rinsing. For heavy spotting that has been there a long time, ask a professional what can be improved before you pay for it.

The takeaway

Cincinnati tap water is hard: 126 to 140 mg/L, inside the USGS "hard" band of 121 to 180 mg/L. Sprinkler spray that dries on glass leaves mineral spots that get harder to remove the longer they sit. Point sprinklers away from windows, and book hard-water treatment before spots etch; deeply etched glass can only be partly improved.
