Hard-water stains on windows: what can be fixed

White spots on the lower panes after the sprinklers run are minerals, not dirt. Cincinnati's water is hard, so this is one of the most common things we are asked about. Here is what comes off, what does not, and how to keep it from coming back.

The cause

Why Cincinnati water spots glass

Greater Cincinnati Water Works reports average hardness of 126 mg/L (7 grains per gallon) at its Richard Miller plant and 140 mg/L (8 grains per gallon) at the Charles M. Bolton plant (Greater Cincinnati Water Works 2025 Water Quality Report). On the USGS scale, 121 to 180 mg/L counts as "hard".

Each time a drop dries on glass, the water leaves and the minerals stay. Sprinkler overspray is the usual source, which is why spotting is worst on lower panes facing the lawn. Rain that dries in direct sun adds to it.

Three stages of hard-water staining

  • Fresh spotting (weeks): wipes off during a normal cleaning. No extra treatment needed.
  • Built-up deposits (months): a white film that ordinary cleaner smears. Comes off with a mineral remover and careful agitation, done pane by pane. This is the "hard-water treatment" on our quotes.
  • Etched glass (years): the minerals have eaten into the surface. Polishing improves it; nothing restores it fully short of replacing the pane. We tell you before we start so you can decide.

How to keep sprinkler spots off your windows

Aim sprinkler heads so the arc stops short of the house; most spotting comes from one or two heads that wet the wall. Run the system before sunrise so any overspray dries slowly in the shade. After a cleaning, keep the glass dry at the edges where drops collect.

Two cleanings a year, spring and fall, catch new spotting at the easy stage. Homes with sprinklers on three sides sometimes add a summer exterior-only visit.

FAQ

Hard-water stain questions

Can hard-water stains be removed from windows?

Fresh and light spotting, usually. We assess the glass first: mineral deposits that sit on the surface come off with a mineral remover and careful agitation. Spots that have been there for years can etch into the glass; those can often be improved but not made perfect, and we tell you which case you have before any work starts.

Why do my windows spot after the sprinklers run?

Cincinnati tap water is hard (126 mg/L (7 grains per gallon) at one treatment plant and 140 mg/L (8 grains per gallon) at the other, per the Greater Cincinnati Water Works 2025 Water Quality Report). When sprinkler spray dries on glass, the water evaporates and the minerals stay as white spots. The longer they sit in the sun, the harder they bond.

Will vinegar work?

On light, fresh spotting, a cloth with equal parts white vinegar and water can help; test a small corner first and keep it off natural stone, brass and painted trim. It will not touch etched glass, and scrubbing with anything abrasive makes etching worse.

Is hard-water treatment included in window cleaning?

Hard-water spot treatment is available on request as part of our window cleaning. Mention the spotting when you ask for a quote so the time and product are included in the written price.

How do I stop it coming back?

Aim sprinkler heads away from windows and siding, run them early in the morning so overspray dries before the sun hits, and dry glass edges after any rinse. Those three changes prevent most new spotting.
